I'm so excited about the new Summer Writer Series -
A Southern State of Mind
If you love all things Southern Writers do best then ready those laptops, keyboards, pens and sketch pads for a world of southern inspiration headed your way.
What's the difference between Southern Writers and all the other writers of the world?
I get asked that question frequently. At conferences, on panels, on the radio, over coffee and in classrooms. My answer is what it's always been. Everyone knows how much I love ALL writers. And I champion writers from around the world. I love the way that writers from other countries and backgrounds can teach us truths that we would never understand otherwise. BUT on the Southern Question -
I once told a group of students -
It's like this. When I read a writer say from New York they are so smart that I can hear their brain ticking. That's what I'm thinking when I'm reading whatever wonderful thing they have created. They are so smart. So smart. But - when I read a Southern Writer I feel their heart beating. It's just that simple for me. There is something raw and primitive, earthy and eternal about their writing.
But what IS IT that makes Southern writers so . . . Southern? So incredible? Besides being born and bred here of course. I mean - what's in the water? The dirt? The DNA? And how can those of us who are southern draw deeply from that well within us? How can those of us from other parts unknown tap into those magical literary waters? Well, that's what we fixin' to find out.
It's why I'm so excited about focusing down on this Series teaching Southern Writing. Creative Non-fiction or fiction, short stories or essays, novel or screenplay - there is something essentially magic about Southern writing and that will be the inspiration and the focus.

It would be my delight and honor to be a part of your journey forward in your writing life. This is the kind of rich, learning experience I wish I had years ago as I worked to complete my first novel and wondered what my next step should be.
Students are from all walks of life, of different ages, professional backgrounds and a wide range of writing experiences. All have created a more respectful place in their lives for their writing and grown in the process.
The Backstory: About four months ago I began this new experiment in teaching. I've been teaching writing for fifteen years but the concept of teaching an intimate writers group by conference call was a new undertaking. The concept of a weekly mastermind call with a focus on business goals and innovative learning not new because I had been a participant in such a call for two years. I understood the concept and knew the results which were life changing and rewarding.
So the concept of teaching a new Writing Series by conference call and with the addition of some one-on-one calls began. The new Mastermind Writing Series, was born. It has featured everything from discovering your authentic writing voice to the publishing business specifics. It's also featured some incredible authors guesting in including Joy Jordan Lake, Bren McClain, Patti Callahan Henry, Michael Morris and others. (I have recordings of them in the bay to edit and share.)
When our series completed, 100% of those involved decided to continue with another series. Calls taken place every Tuesday at 7 am with an enthusiastic, educational, inspirational method of taking your writing seriously.
